Interview with D Sloan

Warren Peace (WP)-

I hope everyone has had a great week so far. If you don’t know, I’m Warren Peace of The Write Reviews. Today you’ll be introduced to D Sloan, the emcee behind the album “New Levels Bring New Devils”. I’m intrigued to learn more about the artist myself.

Alright D Sloan, I always kick off these interviews with these three questions: Where are you from? Which artists were your earliest influences in hip hop? What is the hip hop scene like where you’re from?

DS-

Well I’m originally from California. Born in the Bay Area (Hayward, CA) lived there for about 11 years or so. Relocated to Tracy, CA and for about another 10-11 years or so. Relocated to Arizona in 2010 and been here ever since. The artists that were my early influence ranged from Fabolous, Jadakiss, E-40, Snoop Dogg, Chamillionaire, G-Unit, and Jay-Z. The hip hop scene where I’m originally from is booming. I learned a lot of my independent hustle from the Bay because that’s what that area specializes in. I was able to soak up a lot of game from the older guys.

WP-
“New Levels Bring New Devils” is an interesting title for an album. I’ve never heard anything quite like it. How did you decide on the title?

DS-

I decided to come up with that title because I feel like it’s relevant and timeless. Whenever we progress, it usually means we make it to a new level in whatever field we are in. With that come new obstacles, new hurdles we have to overcome. Similar to more money, more problems. We obtain new levels, there will always be new devils to deal with.

WP-
This is also your debut album, isn’t that right? Have you been featured on any other artists’ tracks before this album?

DS-

Actually, it isn’t my debut album. I’m not big on calling my music albums, mixtapes etc. I call them all projects because they all were created at different times in my life. I actually have 2 original projects out. “The Elixir” was released in 2014 and “New Levels Bring New Devils” was released in 2016.

WP-
What about future projects? What can we expect next from D Sloan?

DS-

Right now, I am working on a lot of features. I also am working on multiple projects I will release for Free Download for the fans because they always support me when I drop singles or projects that they pay for. It’s just something I’ve always done.

WP-
“New Levels Bring New Devils” showcased a lot of your potential as an artist. What were you able to learn and/or develop as an artist while creating the album?

DS-

Yes, I learn and develop from every project I do. I also learn from every song I do actually. Trying different sounds and cadences that are appealing. The creative juices are endless for me.

WP-
How did you end up recording your first track? Like, what led up to the moment that put you behind a mic?

DS-

I actually was at my cousin’s house and he is a producer. He had a homestudio setup and would make beats and record other artists. I was still developing my sound and he told me to write to this beat and record it. I was really nervous but ended up doing it and it actually came out pretty dope. He told me I should continue to develop and pursue music. From there, I dedicated myself to my craft.

WP-
Let’s get a little more personal- what is something interesting about you that most people would never notice?

DS-

Haha well! There is a lot actually. But just one thing, I am double jointed in my thumbs! I can move them certain ways that look very awkward. Trust me, a lot of people never notice.

WP-

Before we conclude this interview, would you like to let everyone know how they can stay updated with you thru social media? Do you have a website or links to your music? Is there anything else you would like to add?

DS-

People can stay updated with me very easily! All my social media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, ReverbNation, SoundCloud) you can find me @dsloansaysthis. My Youtube channel you can find me @DSloanTV. Most importantly, you can find everything centraly located along with my online store at my website http://www.dsloansaysthis.net
